Rad Racer on the NES

Rad Racer is a racing game developed and published by Square in 1987.

In this game, players drive a Ferrari 328 or a generic Formula One racing machine through a race course.

Players can choose between two types of car to race, either a 328 Twin Turbo or an F1 Machine, and then tries to complete eight driving stages.

Competitors vehicles get faster as the levels progress and include VB Bugs to Ferrari Testarossas.

Players cars can accelerate up to 255 km/h, brake, steer, attempt to pass their opponents and knock them off the road. Hitting any obstacles or other cars can cause the players’ vehicle to flip and crash.

Levels vary in location from Los Angeles, San Francisco, as well as the Greek Parthenon.

Players have a simulated dashboard that indicates how far through the race they have gone, and a small checkered flag indicates when they have completed the race.

Excitebike on the NES

At the start of the game, the player can choose from five tracks in which to race.

The player controls the position of the red motorcycle with the Y-axis of the directional pad, and controls acceleration with the A and B buttons. Using B causes greater acceleration, but also increases the motorcycle’s temperature shown as a bar at the bottom of the screen. When the temperature exceeds safe limits the bar becomes full; the player will be immobilized for several seconds while the bike cools down. Driving over an arrow will immediately reduce the bike’s temperature.

The pitch of the motorcycle’s airborne trajectory can be modified with the X-axis of the directional pad: left raises the front, and right lowers the front. In the air, this rotates the bike, but can also be used to perform wheelies on the ground. Pushing up or down turns the handlebars left or right, respectively, when the bike is on the ground.

If the player crashes by colliding with an opponent or ramp, or by landing badly from a jump, the rider is knocked off the bike and lands in the field. Pushing A repeatedly allows the rider to run back to the bike and continue the race.

Excitebike has three modes of gameplay.

In Selection A, the player races solo.
In Selection B, CPU players join the player. They act as another form of obstacle.
In Design Mode, the player has the ability to build racing tracks.

Spyhunter on the NES

Spy Hunter is a vertical scrolling driving game with the player in the role of a spy driving an armed sportscar. The object of the game is to travel the freeway destroying as many enemy vehicles as possible while protecting civilian vehicles.

The game begins with the player driving the fictitious G-6155 Interceptor. Various enemy vehicles try to destroy the player’s car or to force it off the road, including a helicopter that drops bombs from overhead. A counter increments the score while the car is moving and on the road. Additional points are earned destroying enemy vehicles using weapons or by forcing them off the road.

Following periodic forks in the road, players can enter new regions with different terrain or weather conditions.

Three special weapons are available: oil slicks, smoke screens, and surface-to-air missiles. Each has limited ammo and are lost if the player’s car is destroyed.

The in-game road is endless and the game itself has no ending

Enduro on Atari 2600

Endurois a racing game where you compete in the National Enduro. The object of the game is to pass a certain number of cars each day. Doing so will allow the player to continue racing for the next day.

The driver must avoid other drivers and pass 200 cars on the first day, and 300 cars with each following day.

As the time in the game passes, visibility changes as well. When it is night in the game the player can only see the oncoming cars’ taillights. As the days progress, cars will become more difficult to avoid as well. Weather and time of day are factors in how to play. During the day the player may drive through an icy patch on the road which would limit control of the vehicle, or a patch of fog may reduce visibility.

If a player succeeds in racing five days or more, an on-screen trophy is displayed.

Grand Prix on Atari 2600

The player drives a Formula One car in a time trial on one of four race tracks, each of these tracks has a different difficulty level. Difficulty is gauged by the length of the course, the number of cars and oil slicks on the track, and the number of bridges to cross.

The player views the race from a top-down perspective, and the screen scrolls from right to left.

The joystick’s button is the throttle: Depressing it accelerates, and releasing it decelerates.
Pressing the joystick leftward applies the brake.

Grand Prix is a time trial, and the competing cars are obstacles rather than competition for the finish line. The player’s car can outpace the other cars, but if it collides with one, its speed drops lower than that of the impacted car.

Driving over an oil slick causes the player’s car to skid slightly sideways, but does not slow it down.

Once every mile, the player crosses a bridge over blue water. Colliding with a wall of the bridge will stop the car, and the player must gain speed again.
